Set above one of Sydney's most extraordinary outlooks, the Bellevue Hill Residence presented a rare curatorial challenge: designing an interior with enough presence, restraint and permanence to exist in dialogue with the harbour beyond, rather than simply deferring to it. The brief called for a home that could hold the evolving rhythms of contemporary family life while remaining refined enough for frequent entertaining—a transitional sanctuary layered quietly into a home of genuine heritage character.
The existing architecture set the tone from the outset. Fine period detailing, original cornicing, and tall French doors that open onto the harbour establish a natural rhythm through the home, dissolving the threshold between inside and out. Rather than reinterpreting these details, the curation amplifies them, using spatial planning to draw movement toward the landscape and letting the architecture's own cadence guide the placement of every piece.
Furniture, lighting and artwork were orchestrated to build hierarchy, rhythm and moments of visual pause. A restrained material palette provides a calm architectural canvas, onto which sculptural forms, tactile finishes and rich natural materials introduce depth without excess. Furniture throughout was chosen less as decoration and more as inhabitable sculpture—soft geometries offering a quiet counterpoint to the home's formal architectural language, tempering the linearity of the walls, cornices and glazing without disturbing its composure.

The open living and dining areas are the clearest expression of this brief: modern elegance, held without effort. The Muse Sofa is paired with the Ruff Armchair by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso, the two pieces trading a sculptural exchange across the room. Both share a bold, curved form and a visual weight that never tips into heaviness, together establishing the palette's foundation—neutral in saturation, with subtle mauve undertones that shift warmly through the day. Custom Studio BASE rugs anchor each zone within the open plan, spatially framing the furniture and lending distinct identity to the living and dining areas while preserving the continuity of the whole.
In the dining space, the repeated arch motif of the Ellison Studios dining chairs wraps around the Casa Blanco concrete table, a composition that feels simultaneously grounded and fluid. Rich velvet upholstery offsets the table's mineral texture, setting up a tactile dialogue between softness and permanence—quietly theatrical, without ever announcing itself.
Art and objects were introduced with the same intent. A large figurative oil above the fireplace anchors the living room with genuine emotional weight, its deep tonal field and single vivid note of colour giving the room something to organise itself around. Ceramics, sculptural objects and considered books populate the open shelving—not as styling, but as the beginning of a personal collection, chosen to hold its place as the home grows around it.

Material continuity carries beyond the interior envelope. Espresso timber, warm taupe upholstery and textured finishes extend across the terrace, dissolving the threshold between inside and out and allowing the harbour landscape to read as the final layer of the interior composition.
What distinguishes the Bellevue Hill Residence is not the individual objects it contains, but the clarity of the composition they collectively create. Heritage architecture, contemporary design and everyday family life coexist without hierarchy, each element reinforcing the next. The result is an interior that feels composed rather than decorated—a home where interior, landscape and life exist as one continuous experience.
